I’m a 70 year old retiree who got into microcontrollers a couple of years ago when my Son-in-Law said he needed a way to know if the water in his hydroponics system stopped flowing. That opened the floodgates for a new hobby that often feels more like a full-time job. I love it! I’ve been involved off and on for over 50 years since taking electronics classes in High School.
I’ve been using Raspberry Pis for MQTT, Node Red, InfluxDB and Grafana for several projects since to monitor and/or control all kinds of boards, sensors and outlets. My fear is if something happens to me, and I can’t do this stuff anymore, my Son-in-Law won’t have a clue what I‘ve done and won’t have the inclination to learn this “fiddly stuff”, as he calls it.
When a relative said he was getting into growing mushrooms, and moved a couple of shipping containers onto my S-i-L’s farm, I came across Mycodo and figured I’d use it for his needs and, down the road, transition the existing hydroponics system over to it as well. Hopefully, between the two of them, they will learn Mycodo and I won’t have to spend time I can use elsewhere trying to document what I can remember of what I’ve done.
Fortunately Kyle has put all this effort into Mycodo and done a ton of documentation (though sometimes a chore to find what you need). I’m looking forward to continuing down this rabbit hole and learning even more as I go.
